My Dab Pen Won't Charge! Here's How To Fix It

Sometimes, the reason your dab pen doesn’t charge is due to a simple issue you can fix yourself. On other occasions, it may be time to purchase a new dab pen to replace the old one.  

What Is a Dab Pen?

Dab pens are used specifically for dabs, which are those small globs of concentrated THC. These are often mistaken for vape pens and although they share similarities in the way they’re constructed, ultimately, what makes them different is the substance that goes into them. A vape pen typically only uses liquid forms of THC while a dab pen focuses on primarily those sticky globs of THC concentrates. You may also notice that the terms “dab pens” and “wax pens” are used interchangeably.

Why Dab Pens Stop Charging

There are a variety of reasons why your dab pen may stop charging. While there are some occasions when it’s a relatively quick fix, sometimes you just need to replace an old battery. We walk you through some of the reasons why your dab pen stops charging and let you know when it’s time to say goodbye and say hello to something new.

Connection Plate Needs Adjusting

The reconnection plate inside of your dab pen is the piece that activates your cartridge and it’s also the piece that permits your charger to deliver power back to your battery when you have it charging. When your connection plate needs adjusting, you may still be able to see that the light at the end of the battery turns on, except that the battery still isn’t activating. That means it’s not transferring power back correctly to your cartridge. This is by far the most common reason why dab pens stop charging.

How To Fix It 

Luckily, this is a super easy fix. Grab an item like a paper clip to gently lift open the connection plate inside of your battery. Then, go ahead and screw on your charger or your cartridge. This slight misplacement of your connection plate can happen to anyone. This is because connection plates are specifically designed to move around slightly to fit different types of cartridges. It’s actually a helpful design but it can land you in some hot water if it moves a little bit too far. Therefore, always keep a paper clip on hand for when you may need to pry it up slightly.

Blocked Airflow

Another common reason why your dab pen stops charging is when there is airflow blockage. This happens when you keep using your pen with different cartridges but not keeping it clean between uses. Every time you’re using a new cartridge, a little bit of that waxy material gets left behind. You’ve probably touched a sticky pen at some point, so you know what we’re talking about. If you’re not consistently keeping it clean, then that material can build up and eventually create blockages. To diagnose this issue, just take a look at your mouthpiece. If you see that there is any debris or any sticky substances that may be blocking the airflow, then you know what you need to do.

How To Fix It

This is a relatively quick fix as well. All you need is a toothpick and a small cotton swab to soak with rubbing alcohol. The toothpick can help you get into those really small crevices and the rubbing alcohol-soaked cotton swab can help clean up the waxy substances so that you don’t get them all over your fingertips. Once it’s clean, go ahead and reattach it to your charger and see if it charges. If this fix doesn’t take care of getting it charged back up, then you may need to move on to get your battery replaced.

Battery Needs to Be Replaced 

Dab pens can be pretty affordable, costing around $35 on the lower end. The fact is batteries aren’t meant to last forever. You will eventually have to replace the ones you own. A battery is ultimately what gets powered up so you’re ready to enjoy a nice vape sesh. If you’ve tried the other fixes and they just aren’t cutting it, it may just be time to let the old dab pen go and check out some newer, more advanced options.

The cheaper variety will eventually die out sooner than some more expensive dab pen options. But either way, when you either use your dab pen too often, get it wet, or drop it, you may just need to bite the bullet and pick up a new dab pen so you can enjoy your stash without getting frustrated without feeling bummed when you realize the battery has been charging for hours and when you pick it up to use it, it’s still dead (we know that awful feeling!).

How To Fix It

Lots of stoners might skip this step but it’s important because there’s a reason a manufacturer gives you that warranty. You may just be able to fill out the warranty information to get it replaced.
