Glycerin Coils Cool the Smoke by Over 300 Degrees!

Glycerin is an organic gel-like liquid often found in food and some sweeteners. It freezes faster than water. It also remains frozen longer than water. A non-toxic fatty gel, glycerin doesn't expand and contract like water does so there is no extra pressure on the glass. 

Why not just use ice cubes? Melting ice cubes will raise the water levels in the base of your bong which will ruin the performance of your piece and make it harder to hit.

Only a small percentage of the smoke will have a physical interaction with the ice cubes. The issue is how long this interaction actually is, which could be about as long as it takes you to inhale.
